Seed Selection & Substitutions

Rockey Farms seed potatoes are grown for at least four years before they are available for sale.
Our seed program starts with tissue culture propagation and nuclear seed planted in a greenhouse.
The nuclear crop is then increased over several years in the field to ensure quality potatoes make it to farms and gardens across the country.

If you are a long time customer, you probably have noticed that there are a few varieties missing from our catalogue this year.
Yellow Finn, Bintje, German Butterball, Golden Globe and Red Gold are no longer a part of the Rockey Farms seed program.
These varieties are low yielding, have a high disease susceptibility and are not in high demand.
If you are looking for Yellow Finn seed potatoes, Rockey recommends Vista Gold. Vista Gold has a very high, round tuber set, but with less misshapen tubers. It has a greater disease resilience and yield that out preforms Yellow Finn. Our customers have provided us with positive feedback about Vista Gold, and it continues to shine in our seed program.

Vista Gold

If you are looking for German Butterball seed potatoes, Rockey Farms recommends Jelly. German Butterball has suffered the greatest yield declines throughout the years. Jelly has a similar oblong shape, a slightly netted skin, a tremendous flavor profile and it easily doubles German Butterball yields.
